A Bushel and a Peck
When I was young my parents used to pile the five of us children into the back of the station wagon and head to Eastern Washington to visit the relatives. On those long drives they would sit up front and sing a lot of different songs to keep us all happy. One of those songs, written by Frank Loesser, was called A Bushel and a Peck. I can still hear them singing it today and would love to be a kid again in that car, comforted by the songs of my parents. But I digress....
What is a bushel? How much is a peck? Why not take a moment with your children and find out? First play the song for them. Here is a recording on YouTube to get you started.
Then see about measuring out apples or potatoes, tennis balls or stuffed animals. (What do you have a bushel of?)
It's so fun to know something that a lot of others don't. Play around with those words and measure out a few things in the process.
You could even learn the song, take a drive and sing it together! Let me know if you do.
I love you a bushel and a peck
A bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck
A hug around the neck and a barrel and a heap
A barrel and a heap and I'm talking in my sleep
About you
